Taking what we can get... Part Deux

Some pics from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, which we didn't even knew existed before all the big-name award shows got canceled.

Finally, an awards show with stars. The red carpet was back in business at Cipriani in Midtown, last night and stars such as George Clooney and his girlfriend Sarah Larson were on hand for the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures gala. Unlike Sunday's Golden Globes, the event wasn't televised, so there were no picketing writers. [ny post]

BritBrit wants a new bay-bay

Just a few short days after losing custody of her children, BritBrit has a plan: MAKE MORE! She's so clever!

Days after a judge ruled Britney Spears still may not visit her children at this point, the pop star and her paparazzo pal Adnan Ghalib peruse pregnancy tests Monday at a Los Angeles Rite Aid. [people]

Unhitched!

Just a fortnight after they were 'married' (symbolically), Eddie and Tracey have decided "Nah, Not for me."

Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds have called it quits just two weeks after their intimate wedding, PEOPLE has learned exclusively. "After much consideration and discussion [WELL, AS MUCH CONSIDERATION AS YOU CAN GIVE IT IN TWO WEEKS TIME --ed], we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further," Murphy and Edmonds tell PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.” [people]

Brit's Dressing Room Escapade!

BritBrit is having a grand ol' time with her new boy toy, Adnan. With their impromptu trip to Mexicale over and done, they have to one-up themselves right quick. (Thanks for the tip, Karen!) And they did:

On Jan. 13, the troubled pop star and her boyfriend Adnan Ghalib hit up the Betsey Johnson store at the Westfield Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where they caused a disturbing commotion. Britney grabbed dresses from the racks and disappeared into a dressing room with Adnan. Moments later, Britney came out completely naked, shocking salesclerks! "I was blown away. Britney's private parts were right in front of me!" a store employee tells Life & Style. "I grabbed a dress to cover her and she screamed, 'Get away from me! Don't you f------ come near me!' says the employee. "Then she disappeared in the dressing room with Adnan for 45 minutes. They were making weird noises. It was disgusting." When Britney and Adnan stumbled out, Britney mumbled something unintelligible. "I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She was slurring and spitting, and talking with a British accent," says the employee. "Her face was covered with cold sores and acne, and her scalp was patchy. I wanted to help her, but she was so mean that I left her alone. "Then she muttered, 'F--- you!' and left the store." [life&style]

She's definitely on the brink... and it looks like as a defense mechanism to the shit her life has become she's delving into multiple personality syndrome. Very sad... There are a lot of rumors that she's suicidal... A serious intervention need to be done.

Britney Spears wrote a suicide note saying “Perhaps it would be better if I was dead,” according to The Sun newspaper. Apparently a friend...found the letter just before her meltdown this month when she held her sons hostage. A source told the paper: “The letter was very sad. Britney talked about her loneliness, how unfair life is and not being able to trust people.” [mtv uk]

oooh, this is some good shit

Someone managed to leak a video of Tom Cruise proselytizing about Scientology on to YouTube. Mysteriously, after the blogs and mainstream media pick up on it, it's pulled off of YouTube. Why? What have they got to hide? Here's a partial transcript of what Cruise has to say about his main man, Xenu:

...I think it’s a privilege to call yourself a Scientologist, and it’s something that you have to earn because a Scientologist does... has the ability to create new and better realities and improve conditions. Being a Scientologist, you look at someone and know absolutely that you can help them.

"Being a Scientologist, when you drive past an accident... you know you have to do something about it because you know you’re the only one that can really help.

"We are the authorities on getting people off drugs, we are the authorities on the mind, we are the authorities on improving conditions... we can rehabilitate criminals.

"It is the time now. Now is the time... Being a Scientologist, people are turning to you, so you better know it, you better know it and if you don’t, go and learn it, but don’t pretend you know it. It’s like we’re here to help.

"So it’s our responsibility to educate, create the new reality. We have that responsibility to say, 'Hey, this is the way it should be done because we do it this way and people are actually getting better.'

"And let’s get it done. Let’s really get it done and have enough love and compassion and toughness that you’re really going to do it and do it right.

"I have to tell you something – it is rough and tumble, and it’s wild and woolly, and it’s a blast, it’s a blast, it really is fun because, dammit, there is nothing better than the going out there and fighting the fight and suddenly you see things are better.

"I do what I can, and I do it the way I do everything. [laughs] There’s nothing part-of-the way for me."

OK. Obviously he's impassioned. He believes. But WHAT THE FUCK IS IT that he believes in. Did you once, whilst reading that mumbo jumbo, catch WTF 'IT' is? WHAT IS IT??? You know, I don't think he knows what 'IT' is. And seriously, what's the big fucking secret?

According to The Huffington Post, here's the scoop on the case of the disappearing promotional video:

Half an hour after posting this story Sunday at 10 pm, about two hours after gawker's time stamp, Huffington Post was alerted that the video content in the story was no longer there or playing.

Mark Ebner, the investigative reporter, just emailed us links to some Scientology promotional videos. Morton's central claim is that Cruise...is the effective number two of the Church of Scientology...The videos bear out, at the very least, that Cruise is central to the organization's marketing efforts. In this amazing clip, to a background track of theme from Mission Impossible, Cruise explains how Scientologists are "the authorities on the mind", the only people who can bring peace and unite cultures.

Wonder if they pulled it because of the Andrew Morton bio -- worried that the video would lend credence to many of Morton's theories. Hmmm? I think we're on to something.

Hey, Big Spender!

Proof that Johnny Depp is good people. Not only is he considered the Best Autograph Signer according to Autograph magazine, now Johnny is generously and graciously putting his money where his mouth is. A true class act.

Johnny Depp is giving back in a big way. A day after winning a Golden Globe, the Pirates of the Caribbean star on Monday gave a bundle of his own doubloons, $2 million worth, to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital as thanks to the staff who saved his daughter's life. Per Britain's Daily Mail, the 43-year-old Depp also made a surprise visit to the facility to personally thank the doctors and nurses. The star's eight-year-old daughter, Lily-Rose, was hospitalized in March after an E. coli poisoning reportedly caused her kidneys to fail....As an extra thank-you, Depp reportedly invited Lily-Rose's five doctors and nurses to last month's London premiere party for Sweeney. And in a gesture that undoubtedly put a smile on every sick kids' face, Depp also secretly turned up at Great Ormond Nov. 29 and entertained its young patients with bedtime stories in the guise of Captain Jack Sparrow. (He even had his costume flown in from Los Angeles for the occasion.) [e! online]

It was only a matter of time...

Craziness. Another young star loses his life to a battle with drugs. Though the cause of death is yet to be confirmed, Brad's known addiction issues are most likely the source.

Actor Brad Renfro has died at age 25, PEOPLE has confirmed. Renfro died Tuesday at a Los Angeles apartment where he spent the night with friends, Craig Harvey, chief investigator for the Los Angeles county coroner, tells PEOPLE. Renfro was heard snoring overnight, but found not breathing later Tuesday morning, and the friends called 911. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene at about 9 a.m., Harvey says. A cause of death was not immediately determined, but Renfro had a history of drug problems. Drug overdose is a "possibility considering his history, but right now all we have is the history of his drinking the previous night," Harvey says. "All that we have is that he was last known to be alive during the morning hours and he was snoring." The actor, who starred in The Client and Apt Pupil, had recently completed a movie with Winona Ryder and Billy Bob Thornton. [people]

Sad.

HOLY CRAP!

Looks like Hollywood's confirmed bachelor may be settling down. He went ahead and proved his boys can swim!

Matthew McConaughey and girlfriend Camila Alves are expecting a child, the actor announced Tuesday on his Web site. "My girlfriend Camila and I made a baby together," McConaughey writes. "It's 3 months growin in her womb and all looks healthy and lively so far. We are stoked and wowed by this miracle of creation and this gift from God, and so excited for the adventure that will come in raising this child, being mother and a father, and shepherding him or her through this life.... Wish us the best, keep us in your prayers, and God bless evolution. Thanks for being fans of me and my work and now this new and miraculous chapter in my life, as me and Camila and our child do our best to just keep living." He signs his message, "Wow, McConaughey." [people]

Wow, indeed.

He's baaaaack.

VH1’s Rock of Love, with everyone’s dream paramour Bret Michaels (NOT)
kicked off a second season last night. I didn't think it was possible,
but they found an even fugglier bunch of degenerates than last season
[Note: Do not attempt to eat anything whilst perusing the pics below].
I really think this is how the screening process goes:
  1. Have you ever been exposed to high levels of radiation?
(This includes cosmetic procedures that have gone awry.)
  2. Do you have an addiction to meth?
(preferably to the point at which your teeth have fallen out.)
  3. When you worked as a stripper (we're leaving out the possibility
that you didn't at one time work the pole)
were you ever involved in a bar brawl that left visible scarring?
    (preferably on the face).
  4. How many bags of nickels were you hit with?
(Buffalo nickels and slugs are acceptable)
  5. Can you recall the name of one of the men
who took your virginity during the gang bang?
  6. How many botched cosmetic procedures have you endured?
(This includes horse-hair extensions and butt implants)
  7. What non-traditional clothing items have you used for tops and bottoms? (We'll accept scarves, hats, belts, hair bands, and suspenders)
BTW one of them is definitely a she-man (you guess which one. It won’t be hard).
And I really hope the surprise plot twist this season involves Bret getting down
and really turned on over the pre-op package in her pants.

By George!

George to the rescue! (Let's hope this works... he'll be a friggin' hero. Come on, George... Girl needs to watch the Oscars...!)

George Clooney has offered to act as a mediator between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) union members and Hollywood bosses in a bid to end the strikes...the Michael Clayton star has offered to set up a "mediation panel" to settle the WGA members' grievances - and plans to ask Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and ER producer John Wells to help him end the dispute, according to L.A. Weekly. Speaking of the strikes earlier this week, he said, "When the strike happens, it's not just writers (affected)... Our hope is that all the players will lock themselves in a room and not come out until they finish. We want this to be done. That's the most important thing." [imdb]

...and the winners are:

If you watched the E! footage (and not the slowed-down, poor-excuse-for-infotainment on NBC with Nancy O'Dell and the ick-factor that is Billy Bush), then you saw history in the making. The first-ever cancellation of the Golden Globes ceremony brought us the strangest "let's get this over with" awards presentation ever. The Golden Globe winners were announced, without any fanfare or 'presentation'. AFI AWARD WINNERS

My man, Clooney... looking a tad worn.

Javier, who will win everything in a landslide this year.

The funny peeps behind Superbad, 40-year-old Virgin, and Knocked Up.
Jonah Hill, Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann

Anna "Chuck" Friel

Talk of the writers strike buzzed around a Four Seasons ballroom Friday as George Clooney, Javier Bardem and other stars gathered for a no-pressure awards lunch hosted by the American Film Institute. The AFI Awards honored 10 films and 10 television programs of 2007, as selected by juries that include critics, academics and others in the industry. There were no winners or losers, and no acceptance speeches — just a lunch of Lake Superior whitefish, truffle herb mashed potatoes and chocolate cake....

The films honored at the lunch were "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," "Into the Wild," "Juno," "Knocked Up," "Michael Clayton," "No Country For Old Men," "Ratatouille," "The Savages" and "There Will Be Blood."

The honored TV programs were "Dexter," "Everybody Hates Chris," "Friday Night Lights," "Longford," "Mad Men," "Pushing Daisies," "The Sopranos," "Tell Me You Love Me," "30 Rock" and "Ugly Betty." [ap]

BET Honors

The inaugural BET Honors went ...[were] last night...handing Washington a much-needed shot of black-tie glamour at the Warner Theatre. There was also a protest outside, which, this being the District, counted as a homey touch. The Washington-based network handed out awards across the spectrum of black achievement, ranging from spotlight-magnets Alicia Keys and Tyra Banks... [washington post]

Vivica, sprung from the big house in time to get all dolled up.

Alicia, looking fab in red.

Alicia sitting in the audience with her mom. Aww.

Kerry Washington

Now there's a cute couple, Kerry and John Legend.

Ugh, Tyra. Looking ridiculous in this get-up. When is her face time ovah?

X-Tina Pops

Christina Aguilerra has a baby boy, same day and hospital as Nicole Richie...just an hour apart. (Much like TomKat and Brooke Shields... Someone's always stealing someone else's thunder. Tsk Tsk.)

Pop star Christina Aguilera can now add "mom" to her credits. The Staten Island-born singer gave birth to a baby boy Friday in Los Angeles. The Grammy Award winner, 27, and husband Jordan Bratman, 30, had their little bundle of joy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center about 4 p.m. — just down the hall from where reality star Nicole Richie delivered a daughter an hour earlier. Aguilera's friends and family received news of the birth with a text message saying: "Baby has arrived. Mom and dad are doing well!" Celebrity magazines reported the couple were considering names including Jordan, Max or Jackson Jake. [ny daily news]

Packing for a trip

When I pack for a trip to Mexico, the first thing I grab for is my wedding dress...cause you know, you always need something fancy for a night out.

Revisiting her wedding look, Britney Spears donned one of two dresses from her Kevin Federline nuptials to go to a car dealership last week with her new paparazzi friend....The twist was the pop singer was wearing the same lacy, short dress from her 2004 wedding to Federline. [people]

And they're not kidding... Here's a pic from the wedding (right) to prove it.

Imagining the Red Carpet

Huge Loss in Revenue, not just for writers...

Just to show you how friggin' heartless and callous Hollywood bigwigs are being over this strike... Remember it's not just the writers affected by the loss of work. It's not just rich people taking a stand... The entire industry hinges on the results of this strike: Because scripts can't be written, actors can't work, directors can't direct, which means... everyone from the gaffers and the grips to the craft services people are shit out of luck and wondering where and when their next paycheck is gonna come from. And for most low-paying Hollywood employees, that's a scary prospect.

Take a look at what the cancellation of one award show, the Globes, will cost Hollywood:
  • What we’re looking at is an economic impact from the Golden Globes of about $70 to $80 million each time the event is held, and with the cancellation, there’s probably a lot of people looking at refund policies, because the production costs were already spent with a lot of people planning on parties.
  • We count at least five [after] parties that have been canceled, and that comes to about $2.5 million.
  • What about the Academy Awards?: We’ve done more research on that, and that’s around $130 million, and it has unexpected impacts. For example, there’s a firm in Los Angeles called ABS by Alan Schwartz, and what he does is knock-offs of the most popular gowns on the red carpet, and so if there’s no red carpet, there’s not business for Alan Schwartz.
  • ...the impact of the lost wages [of WGA members and below-the-line workers], when you apply that ripple factor, it’s about $1.4 billion.
  • Do any of your numbers or predictions account for advertising that would be lost in airing these shows?: NBC estimates that they’re going to lose about $14 to $15 million in ad revenues.

Craziness.

It's a...

Nicole Richie gave birth to a baby girl:

Nicole Richie and her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden are the parents of a daughter, the couple's rep at Handprint Entertainment tells PEOPLE. Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. "The beautiful healthy baby girl left the hospital with her ecstatic parents," says the rep, who confirmed the birth to PEOPLE exclusively. [people]

There's a baby boom in H-wood right now... More new parents to mention:

Don't forget JLo, who's having twins -- according to US Weekly. And X-Tina is about to pop at any minute. Stay tuned.

Ugh

He's always gotta be putting his two cents in. I mean, it's her premiere and he's hamming it up. BTW, who told him to wear velvet? VELVET?

Amy goes blonde

and it's not a good look. One should never make major beauty decisions while on the drugs.

heeeellllloooooo

I got nuttin' to say. I just wanted to share the hotness. Johnny's RS cover this month.
