By George, I Think You've Got It.

Brilliant casting... Some of you might think it's a stretch for Robert Downey Jr. to play the famous and well-loved role of Sherlock Holmes, but think again. Remember, Downey Jr. was stellar in Chaplin (underrated and totally deserving of an Oscar). He has the dry humor, the knack for accents, a well-played historical ease, and looks great in vintage garb. I couldn't be more excited about this new casting. (I didn't think that anyone could best Jeremy Brett's portrayal -- but Downey Jr. just might do the trick.)

In the first role he has signed up for since “Iron Man,” Robert Downey Jr....will forsake his high-tech suit for a woolen cloak and cap. Mr. Downey has agreed to play the lead role in the film “Sherlock Holmes,” which will be directed by Guy Ritchie for Warner Brothers, Variety reported. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in October, with a screenplay by Anthony Peckham based on the detective stories of Arthur Conan Doyle and on a comic book, also called “Sherlock Holmes.” Most of the movie will be filmed in London. In the role, which Variety said would plumb Holmes’s brawn as well as his brains, Mr. Downey will have some competition. Columbia Pictures is also preparing a movie based on Holmes, this one a comedy with Sacha Baron Cohen as the title character and Will Ferrell as his sidekick, Dr. Watson. [nyt]

Now, about that last casting... also a stretch, but if the script is good -- that could be friggin' hee-larious. Cross your fingers.

P.S. If you wanna catch Downey Jr. in a fab murder/detective mystery, rent KISS KISS, BANG BANG (he co-stars w/Val Kilmer). His bent on comedy and the chemistry between him and Kilmer is ab-fab.

First of all, I'd watch RDJr. read the friggin' phone book. He's been on my Top 10 since the mid-80s and never left. He is brilliant, beyond talented, funny, and hot to boot, how nice. So go Sherlock! He'll be great.
Secondly, thanks for putting in that preview of the other flick with VK -- I love them both, I never caught that flick, and now I'll make a point of renting it. Thanks for the tip!
